Nativa de Mesoamérica y Sudamérica, cultivada ampliamente en los trópicos.
Descripción botánica
Arbolito de 6 a 8 m, ramas jóvenes hirsutas. Hojas corto-pecioladas u obovado-oblongas de 15 a 30 cm, abruptamente acuminadas, redondeadas u obtusas en la base. Inflorescencia pequeña, cauliflora; flores largamente pecioladas; cáliz rosado, de 6-7 mm; pétalos amarillos. Fruto glabro, ovoide-oblongo, gradualmente atenuado en el ápice, 10-sulcado, los surcos irregularmente rugosos-tuberculados; semillas ovoideas.
