Originaire d'Asie tropicale, devenue pan-tropicale par culture.
Description botanique
Herbacée acaule, de 60 à 90 cm. Tubercules gros, cylindriques ou ellipsoïdaux, jaunes à l’intérieur. Feuilles oblongues ou elliptiques, de 30 à 50 cm, acuminées. Epis cylindriques de 10 à 20 cm, sur une hampe de 12 cm; bractées vert pâle, les supérieures sont rosées; fleurs jaune pâle.
