Botanical description

Very ramified subshrub. Ovate or oblong leaves, with dentate or lobate margins of up to 4 cm long and 3.5 cm wide. Capitula in loose peaks, involucre of 2 to 3 mm, oblong or linear bracts, white corollas of 1 to 1.5 mm. Oblong achenes of 1 mm.

For stomach pain:
prepare a decoction with 40 grams of fresh aerial parts in 30 cups (4 litres) of water, boil for 5 minutes in a closed vessel. Leave to cool, strain (filter) and drink 1 cup 3 times a day for 3 days. Not recommended for children under 4 years of age².

For itching or skin problems: prepare a decoction with 40 grams of fresh aerial
parts in 30 cups (4 litres) of water, boil for 5 minutes in a closed vessel. Cool and apply locally as baths for 20 minutes, 3-4 times a day².

Preparations must never be stored for more than 24 hours, even if refrigerated.

TRAMIL Work⁴
The aqueous extract (50% decoction) from fresh aerial parts (100 μl/well) in vitro had no activity against Staphylococus aureus (ATCC 29737) or Candida albicans (ATCC 10231).

TRAMIL Work⁵
The aqueous extract (30% decoction) from fresh aerial parts (1 and 5 g of plant material/kg), orally in male OF-1 mice (20-25 g), 10 animals/group, analgesia model of acetic acid-induced contortions (0.75%, 0.1 ml/10 g intraperitoneally), and tail flick induced by hot water immersion (55 oC), showed significant analgesic activity (5 g/kg) in the contortion model and did modify the response in the tail-flick model.

TRAMIL Work⁶
The aqueous extract (decoction 10, 30 and 50%) from fresh aerial parts, topically in male OF-1 mice (20-25 g), 6 animals/group, in an ear oedema model, was administered 1 hour before inducing inflammation with croton oil (10 μl/2.5 ml acetone), dose 10 μl in the right ear, and in the left ear 10 μl of acetone was applied as control. The decoction showed significant anti-inflammatory and dose-dependent activity, with inhibitions of 21.8, 37.1 and 43.1% respectively.

TRAMIL Work⁷
The aqueous extract (30% decoction) from fresh aerial parts (1 g plant material/kg), orally in male OF-1 mice (6 animals/group), in an ear oedema model, was administered 1 hour before inducing inflammation with croton oil (10 μl/2.5 ml acetone), 10 μl dose in the right ear, and in the left ear 10 μl of acetone was applied as control. The negative control group received croton oil and acetone under the same conditions. One minute after the Croton oil, the positive control group received, dexamethasone (5 mg/ml acetone), a dose of 0.05 mg/on both sides of each ear. The extract inhibited the inflammatory response 43.72% and dexamethasone 87.83%.

TRAMIL Work⁸
The aqueous extract (30% decoction) from fresh aerial parts (1, 5 and 10 g of plant material/kg), orally in male OF-1 mice (20- 25 g), 10 animals/group, intestinal transit model with 10% activated carbon (0.1 ml/10 g), did not significantly modify intestinal transit.

TRAMIL Work⁹
The aqueous extract (50% decoction) from fresh aerial parts (1.64 g of total solids/100 ml, maximum volume of 2 ml/100 g, two doses, equivalent to 656 mg of total solids/kg or 20 g of fresh plant material/kg), orally in Wistar rats (3 of each sex),
Acute Toxic Classes model (CTA OECD 423), were observe constantly in the first 12 hours and every 24 hours for 14 days.
There were no deaths or other signs of toxicity. No organ damage was observed in the necropsy.

TRAMIL Work¹⁰
The aqueous extract (50% decoction) from fresh aerial parts (0.6 ml/6 cm² of healthy skin) was applied topically in New Zealand albino rabbits, 3 males (1.5 kg), OECD 404 Acute Dermal Irritation model, the patch was removed after 4 hours; no erythema or oedema formation was recorded after 1, 24, 48 and 72 hours.

There is no information available documenting the safety of medicinal use in children, during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
